73 6.75" outer rear axle seals - easy job ???
« on: April 25, 2009, 09:45:36 AM »
Wifey drove my 73 1600 about 10 miles with the emergency brake on  :hypno:
The inside of the brake drum is now blue, the brake shoes are cracked, and the left axle seal is leaking :hypno:

Questions...
1) I looked at the service manual.   It looks like it is not too hard to pull the axle & change the axle seal.  Any BTDT (been there done that) advice?
2) The car has about 62,000 miles and I have already changed the rear axle fluid twice.  Do you think I should change the outer axle bearings at the same time?   Do you think the heat effcted the bearings?
3) If I turn the brake drum that has the metal turned blue, do you think it will be good?
4) I will change the wheel cylinders, shoes, & springs.   I think you would agree.

I would just replace the drums while it's all taken apart. They arn't terribly expensive. Rockauto.com has fhtme for $24/ea.

I would get a cheapo slam hammer set from Harbor Freight or the likes (I got mine at the Pomona Swap Meet for maybe $60). Makes things easy. Mine came with Auto Body Pulling Stuff, Combo Axle/Axle Seal Puller, Steering Wheel Puller, Etc, Etc....VERY  USEFUL when you need one! :fastcar:

I don't think so.   I did not see a C-clip in the service manual.
I will check in more detail again before I dig into it next weekend.

Parts are on order.   I ordered the seals from NAPA and all the brake components from Rock Auto.
I hope the outer bearings are good, I could not find those.

No c-clips, 4 nuts with an access hole in the axle. Sometimes you can wack the axle with a hammer and break it loose. Another option may be the loan-a-tool program if you don't want to spring for the slide hammer.
If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?
