That depends , one if you live in a state that the smog stuff has to work , if not just remove all of it ,sometimes if you remove or plug the wrong vacum line you may have a backfire problem, like if you leave the belt off the smog pump fo some time it will lock up , but i am in a state that does not even look under the hood of any car , new or old .

This link is in a message that is about 3 or 4 down from yours. If you can find someone who has  Mitchel manuals going back into the mid 70's they had pretty good vacuum diagrams in them, maybe a city library. Don't know if a Ford dealer would have kept that sort of information or not but might also be worth a try.

Yes, I did find that thread and did use it as a guide and yes here in California the connections are critical for passing SMOG. I also managed to find a Mitchell's manual at my local mechanic here in California and took a photo of the vacuum diagram for a 1976 non A/C manual trans 2.3L. It appears the vacuum lines are all connected properly and the engine sounds good...for now. Still need to find power to the new Vacuum Solenoid that I purchased recently on Ebay. If anyone has a wiring diagram it would help me locate the correct wire to power the vacuum solenoid. My next visit to my mechanic I will take a photo of the wiring diagram from Mitchell's. Here is the vacuum diagram from Mitchells.

I just want to say congratulation s on passing the California Smog test with a 42 year old car!  Too bad it wasn't a 1975 or older as there is no smog test for them in California.


 Years ago (1980's) the test cutoff was 1965 or older. The last year Volvo made their '1946 Ford looking' 544 was 1965, but holdover cars were sold as 1966's.  And 1966 is what mine was registered as. I think it was the oldest looking car that ever had to be smog tested.

The previous owner smogged it in August 2017 and it passed. I was impressed when I saw that but was concerned thinking how could it possibly pass. I had to repeat the test 3.5 months later in November 2017 when I purchased the car. I also passed and honestly I can't believe it "really" passed twice in 4 months. I don't know if there's a bypass system by where smog stations can "cheat". I'm not saying that my smog station fudged the results but again it's hard to believe. I suppose if there are no air leaks or some components are not working (like the original vacuum solenoid) then it's possible to pass. I'll never know. I guess when I need to smog again in 2019 I'll know.....
